144Hz vs 240Hz: Which Refresh Rate Do You Actually Need?
Refresh rate is the number of times your monitor redraws the image every second. A 60Hz panel shows 60 frames per second at most; a 144Hz panel shows more than double that, and 240Hz doubles it again. More is smoother — but past a certain point, the improvement gets harder to notice and more expensive to buy. Here is how to decide where your money stops.
The jump everyone notices: 60Hz → 144Hz
Moving from 60Hz to 144Hz is the single biggest upgrade in perceived smoothness you can make. Cursor movement, scrolling and camera panning all feel dramatically more fluid, and fast-paced games become easier to track. If you are still on 60Hz and play anything more demanding than turn-based titles, this upgrade should come before a better graphics card in most builds.
The competitive edge: 144Hz → 240Hz
The step from 144Hz to 240Hz is real but subtler. Frame-to-frame latency drops from about 6.9ms to 4.2ms, motion clarity improves, and in twitch shooters like CS2 or Valorant that margin matters. Esports players and anyone grinding ranked FPS titles will feel it. For story-driven games, racing or MMOs, most people struggle to tell 240Hz from 144Hz in blind tests.
Can your PC even feed it?
A high refresh panel only helps if your GPU delivers matching frame rates. Check your actual in-game FPS at your target resolution: if you hover around 150 FPS at 1440p, a 180Hz monitor is the sweet spot and a 240Hz panel is headroom you will not use yet. As a rule of thumb, 1080p 240Hz suits esports rigs, while 1440p 165–180Hz is the best all-round value for mid-to-high-end builds.

Office and casual use: 100Hz is already comfortable. Mixed work and gaming: 1440p at 165–180Hz. Competitive FPS: 240Hz at 1080p or, if budget allows, 1440p.
